The Calm Before the Storm

Well next week the students of the Cedar Ridge Dance Dept, along with Westwood, Ridgeview, CD Fulkes, Chisholm Trail, Grishman, Hernandez dance students, will be performing in weekend #2 of the annual district dance show "Intersection."

The performances take place this coming Saturday, October 24th at 10am, 1pm, and 4pm at the RRISD PAC.
Dancers from Dance 1-4, Ballet 1-4, Jazz 1-4, and Ballet Folklorico will be split between the 3 shows, with projects projections in the lobby from the new Dance & Media Communications course. All of our students have worked tremendously hard and would love to see RRISD come out to support them. The shows are FREE, with a small donation of your choice appreciated.

What has that meant for NextGen Dance? I bit of quietude on our devices. With dress rehearsal only 4 days away, we have had to focus more on stage readiness. Piloting NextGen in performing arts classrooms with inevitably go through periods like this before and during show week.

Classes still continued to do their journaling in Google Classroom and the vocabulary is all wrapped up for the 6 weeks.

My iPad became even more useful in the classroom this week as we analyze the dances for the stage:

  • In Ballet 4, I recorded sections of the dance that needed improvement and we gathered 'round to watch them using the Coach My Video app where we could analyze in slow motion and frame-by-frame.
  • In Jazz 4, I recorded the dance while giving verbal feedback/critiques directly into the device. We then projected and watched the video and could hear my feedback at the same time as seeing the moves in question.
  • I had a student who was not performing use the ipad to take notes to give feedback to the dancers.
  • For classes with students missing, I recorded the dance and spoke directly into the device during recording to talk about sections we fixed or changed. I could then share it immediately on Google drive so that when they returned to class they were caught up with the rest of the class. #Flippedclassroom

Not too many pictures to share since my device was the one in use. :)

Dance and Media is working so very hard on their end-of-unit project for Module 1. The lesson is called "My Signature in Motion!" and they are working in groups to create a photostory project using all of the photography, improv, and shaping skills they have learned in this 1st Module. They will be presenting the projects in the lobby at Intersection. (see above)

I was able to capture a few great images of the girls in action and can not wait to share the final projects. They will be using multiple photo editing apps along with a photostory project of their choice.

We got to expand out skills with the cameras and stage lights received with the Arts & Digital Literacy grant. And a special shout out of appreciation to new campus Community Partner: Zera Thompson of Imajinu Photography. She graciously loaned us additional photography lights and backdrops for use in this project. Our images would not be the same without it! http://www.imajinuphotos.com/about.html

For image quality and focus control, we used the digital cameras. However, the students will be doing all editing on their iPads. So how do we get from SD card to iPad? We used my laptop and dumped all their photos into our collaborative Google Classroom folder for immediate download of their favorite images they choose to edit. Day 2 of the photo shoot began with the students using the iPads to access and view photos from Day 1 to plan what more they needed for Day 2. Next classes: edit time!!

What is on the horizon for after show week? Socrative, Bubbl.us, Prezi, Padlet, Edmodo, Chatterpix and a collaborative project with Jazz and MUSIC and Media Communications.

Move to the Beat

So I am very excited to share this next post! It is a mini-issue focused on two music activities with two of my favorite people: my daughter and my former student-turned-student-teacher Veronica Boccardo! Loopimal Every year my daughter participates in the annual STEAM Fair at Pleasant Hill Elementary in Leander ISD. We engage in a discussion to find a topic that she is interested in researching and then we look for the way make sure we can encompass 1 or more of the STEAM elements in her process and product. As a teacher that strives for creativity and thrives on adding technology, I always help expose her to options of integrating technology into her lesson. Just like our students, they may not always know what is out there or how to use it, but as facilitators of learning we can help lead them both to it and through it. In the past I have exposed her to Thinglink and Shadow Puppet . Both of which were so user friendly, my little smarty-pants was able to complete her project af

5,6,7,8 New year and feeling great!

Welcome back blog readers! 2017 for Cedar Ridge HS dance has gotten off to a great start and I am already excited by the possibilities to come! It's hard to believe the 1st 4 weeks have already flown by and yet as I write this blog I can't believe everything we have already done. Let's check it out! WEEK 1 Sometimes when teachers are asked how they integrate technology into the classroom, they assume that the technology must enhance the student experience. But that couldn't be further from the truth. Technology infusion can also support the teacher. You deserve the streamlining, workload lessening, ease-of-process-magic that technology can give to you too! This year we eased our department to an eye-catching 2 sided syllabus using the program called Canva . We inserted a QR code that lead to our department website , which also displayed our older more extensive syllabus for parents to read. Parents were required to sign a syllabus page that could be signed either

Balletomane

bal·let·o·mane baˈledəˌmān noun:  balletomane ; plural noun:  balletomanes;  a ballet enthusiast So I definitely consider myself a balletomane since a very young age! However, many of my fellow public school teachers would agree that this dance form can often be one of the hardest ones to convince the students of it's importance and the ability to enjoy it.  I was doing ballet with 2 very different classes this last grading period: 1. Academy Ballet: students who actually CHOOSE to take ballet all year long and many repeat it each year 2. Dance 2-4: students that cover multiple genres of dance with ballet probably being their least favorite no matter how enthusiastic or creative I get So, never making anything easy on myself, I decided to try 2 new different projects that were differentiated for the 2 types of classes. One was much more of a success than the other, but that is what I call life-long learning! Every year in December, I am obligated by the ballet Gods
